چکیده

The increasing frequency of severe drought and heat events under climate change is a major cause for concern forest productivity survival. One potential solution to improve resilience may involve tree removal reduce competition. To quantify benefits partial cutting systems drought, we use tree-ring data from long-term experiment in dry ecosystem western Canada, composed primarily mature interior Douglas-fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca ). We ask: (1) How does growth responses (2) how persistent are effects across multiple events? compare 83 trees up 400 years age eight treatment units randomized experimental design representing logging with 25% basal area retention control (100% retention). Retention harvesting was conducted winter 2002/2003 after moderate the summer 2002. site experienced more 2009 drought-heat event 2015. In 2020, obtained height diameter as well increment cores canopy dominant Douglas-fir, which were used derive increments. Based on these increments, calculated four indices drought. Growth increments remaining individuals substantially increased removal. Relative control, low expressed significantly higher post-drought compared 2002 2009, i.e., recovery. also had ability regain pre-drought levels droughts, resilience. However, did not show heat-drought Although response diminished over time, absolute residual remained than 17 harvest, despite repeated droughts. These results suggest that moisture-limited sites provides immediate medium term terms resilience, help forests adapt change.

Potential climate change impacts on temperate forest ecosystem processes

Large changes in atmospheric CO2, temperature, and precipitation are predicted by 2100, yet the long-term consequences for carbon (C), water, and nitrogen (N) cycling in forests are poorly understood. We applied the PnET-CN ecosystem model to compare the long-term effects of changing climate and atmospheric CO2 on productivity, evapotranspiration, runoff, and net nitrogen mineralization in curr...

Growth and dry matter partitioning in sugar beet plants (Beta vulgaris L.) under moderate drought

Growth response of sugar beet plants to drought stress applied at different growth stages has been investigated. Cessation of watering imposed moderate water stress and resulted in the reduction of the relative water content of young and old leaves maximally by 6%. However, water content in taproot was more drastically decreased than in the shoot. Water withholding reduced dry maer accumulatio...

Drought during canopy development has lasting effect on annual carbon balance in a deciduous temperate forest.

* Climate change projections predict an intensifying hydrologic cycle and an increasing frequency of droughts, yet quantitative understanding of the effects on ecosystem carbon exchange remains limited. * Here, the effect of contrasting precipitation and soil moisture dynamics were evaluated on forest carbon exchange using 2 yr of eddy covariance and microclimate data from a 50-yr-old mixed oak...
